CAREGIVERS

The Caregiver Program has been an important component of the Temporary Foreign Worker Programs for many years. The Caregiver Program enables Canadian employers to recruit foreign nationals to work in their homes to provide childcare or home support for seniors or people with disabilities when there is a shortage of Canadians or permanent residents to fill available positions. After two years of work, caregivers have the option of applying for Permanent Residency.

The Government of Canada values the contributions caregivers make to Canadian families and after extensive consultations, has made reforms to improve the Caregiver Program by ending the live-in requirement, reducing family separation, and providing more options to caregivers in Canada. Eligible caregivers have two pathways that will lead to Permanent Residence within six months.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

A person must meet certain requirements to be eligible for the Caregiver Program in Canada. She/he will need:

  • A positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from an employer in Canada
  • A written contract with his/her future employer, signed by both parties
  • Successful completion of the equivalent of a Canadian secondary school education
  • At least six months’ training or at least one year of full-time paid work experience as a caregiver or in a related field or occupation in the past three years
  • Good knowledge of English or French
  • A work permit before entering Canada

EXTEND YOUR WORK PERMIT

There is a possibility to extend a work permit at least 30 days before the expiry date. A temporary status as a worker will continue under the same conditions until application is processed, and a person has been notified of the decision. Furthermore, if a person is looking for work and his/her work permit is about to expire, he/she may apply for a bridge extension, which is a short-term temporary work permit given to live-in caregivers who are between jobs and have not yet found a new employer. The extension is usually for a period of two months.

Note: The application may be submitted at any time and will allow remaining in Canada legally, but does not authorize to work for a new employer.
