WORKERS

Canada has always maintained a solid ranking among the top ten best countries of the world as a great place to work and live in. Every year, thousands of people come to Canada as temporary foreign workers. Canadian working conditions are in high standard and remuneration/salaries very often exceed those of other countries. Furthermore, Canada offers great career opportunities, a unique organizational culture, and countless ways to grow in life.

To work in Canada on a temporary basis foreign nationals need to obtain a work permit. In order to get a Canadian work permit, also referred as a Canadian work visa, foreign nationals must receive a job offer from a Canadian employer. An offer of employment is usually required before the worker may be granted a Temporary Work Permit by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).

There are many paths to obtain a Temporary Work Permit. How to choose the correct one might depend on a number of factors, such as:

  • The type, skill level, and location of the job in Canada; and
  • The nationality of the worker, as well as his or her professional and personal profile.

In some cases, individuals who are seeking to work in Canada do not need to obtain a work permit. There are number of job categories that do not require a work permit. However, other rules may need to be met in order to work legally. Individuals have an option to apply for a work permit from outside Canada, from inside Canada, and as they enter Canada. Based on where they choose to apply, additional requirements must be met.

No matter where they apply, all foreign nationals must:

  • Prove to an officer that they will leave Canada when their work permit expires
  • Show that they have enough money to take care of themselves and their family members during their stay in Canada and to return home
  • Obey the law and have no record of criminal activity
  • Not be a danger to Canada’s security,
  • Be in good health and have a medical exam (if needed)
  • Not plan to work for an employer listed with the status “ineligible”
  • Not plan to work for an employer who, on a regular basis, offers striptease, erotic dance, escort services or erotic massages
  • Not have worked in Canada for one or more periods that total four years after April 1, 2011 (with some exceptions), and
  • Give the officer any other documents they ask for to prove they can enter the country
