Canada resettles refugees in order to save lives and provide stability to those who have no hope of relief. In addition, Canada’s resettlement programs are respected internationally and provide permanent residence as a long term solution. The compassion and fairness are a source of great pride for Canadians.
Refugee is a person who has fled his/her countries because of a well-founded fear of persecution, and who is therefore unable to return home. Usually refugees are forced to leave their home countries as in time of political upheaval or in order to escape from war. Many of them have seen or experienced unthinkable horrors.
There are two Canadian refugee system programs:
- The Refugee and Humanitarian Resettlement Program for people seeking protection from outside Canada
- The In-Canada Asylum Program for people making refugee protection claims from within Canada
