PARENT OR GRANDPARENT SPONSORSHIP

The Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship program is one of the Family Class categories and allows Canadian citizen or permanent resident (who is at least 18 years old) to sponsor a parent or grandparent for Canadian permanent residence. In fact, sponsored family members under this class may be eligible to apply for Canadian Citizenship after four years of permanent residency. In order to receive a visa though Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), both the sponsor and the sponsored person must meet certain eligibility requirements. Also, applicants for permanent residence must go through medical, criminal and background checks.

Not everyone is eligible to sponsor their parent or grandparent under The Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Class. A person may not become a sponsor if she/he:

  • Sponsored another relative in the past and did not meet the terms of the sponsorship agreement
  • Defaulted on a court-ordered support order, such as alimony or child support
  • Received government financial assistance for reasons other than a disability
  • Was convicted of a violent criminal offence, any offence against a relative or any sexual offence
  • Defaulted on an immigration loan—late or missed payments
  • Are in prison, or
  • Has declared bankruptcy and has not been released from it yet

In order to be a sponsor, a person must:

  • Sign a sponsorship agreement where sponsor commits to provide financial support for his/her relative if necessary. This agreement also states that the person becoming a permanent resident will make every effort to support themselves.
  • Promise to provide financial support for the relative and any other eligible relatives accompanying them for a period of three to ten years, depending on their age and relationship to you. This time period begins on the date they become a permanent resident.

Therefore, sponsors have to meet certain income requirements and demonstrate they have met the minimum necessary income level for three consecutive years.

Note: Person who lives in Quebec must also meet Quebec’s immigration sponsorship requirements after Citizenship and Immigration Canada approves him/her as a sponsor.
